Fasting during Ramzan (Ramadan) for individual with lung disease like Asthma, COPD, Fibrosis or Pneumonia is possible but can be challenging. Depending on the severity of the underlying, medication administration and overall health can guide whether an individual is fit to carry out with fasting.
Factors to keep in mind
- Severity of Lung Disease:
- Mild cases those with a well-controlled asthma, mild COPD, mild fibrosis (not oxygen dependant, may be able to fast with adjustments.
- Severe cases (advanced COPD, uncontrolled asthma, chronic respiratory failure, advance fibrosis on long term oxygen) may face worsening of condition and struggle due to dehydration and breathing difficulties.
- Schedule of medications:
- The timing to take medications such as Inhalers and oral medications must be adjusted to suhoor and iftar timings.
- Hydration and Mucus Clearance:
- Dehydration can contribute to thicken of mucus, worsening symptoms.
- Ensure adequate water intake during non-fasting hours to compensate.
- Environmental Factors:
- Hot and dry weather can trigger breathing issues, avoid unnecessary trip outside the house to avoid the exposure.
- Avoid smoke, dust, and allergens during fasting which can trigger Asthma.
